Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid has welcomed the appointment of a new commanding officer for the British army in the North.
Major General Philip Trousdell will replace the outgoing General Officer Commanding, Sir Alistair Irwin, who has served in the North for the last two years.
Dr Reid said: "I welcome this appointment of Major General Philip Trousdell. This is a challenging role but he brings with him a wealth of experience gained during his distinguished service throughout the world.
"I look forward to working with him as we continue to implement the Belfast Agreement and forge a new future for everyone in Northern Ireland through a lasting peace."
Dr Reid also paid tribute to Sir Alistair Irwin. "He has made a major contribution in some of the most demanding and difficult situations," he added.
