Applications by three relatives of gangland murder victim Noel Campion to attend his funeral have been refused by a District Court judge.

The applications by the men, who are custody, were made at a special sitting of Limerick District Court last night, where a nephew of Mr Campion appeared on a firearms charge.

John Campion (20), Ballygrennan Close, Moyross, Limerick, is charged with possession of a Smith Wesson .38 revolver for an unlawful purpose at Craeval Park, Moyross, on April 26th last.

Det Garda David Baynham gave evidence of arresting the accused and told the court Mr Campion made no reply when cautioned about the charge.

Defence solicitor John Herbert said he was reserving his position on bail but asked Judge Tom O'Donnell to make an order so that his client could visit the remains of his late uncle before the funeral.

Noel Campion was shot dead last Thursday morning by a gunman in the Thomondgate area of Limerick city.

Insp Declan Mulcahy told the court the State would be objecting to bail in the case of John Campion because of the seriousness of the charge before the court.

Insp Mulcahy also said he feared more offences would be committed if bail was granted.

Judge Tom O'Donnell refused to make any direction regarding the funeral and said it was a matter for the Department of Justice and the prison authorities.

He said he did not think it would be "prudent to make the direction in the present circumstances" and noted that the question of bail had been reserved.

Mr Herbert told the judge that he had already spoken to the prison authorities, who said permission to attend the funeral was a matter for the court.

Judge O'Donnell disagreed, saying it was his job to either remand somebody in custody or grant bail. Mr Herbert then made a similar application for two other relatives of Noel Campion who are currently in custody. The court heard bail had been refused in the case of both men at previous sittings of Limerick District Court and the High Court in Dublin.

The judge refused this application also. He remanded John Campion in custody until May 2nd next, when he is due to appear before Limerick District Court again.
