The removal of the remains of Private Shane O'Neill, who was killed in a parachuting accident last Monday while on holiday in the Netherlands, will take place this evening in Cork.
The remains will be removed from O'Connor's Funeral Home, Northgate Bridge, Cork, at 7 p.m. today. The cortege will then be accompanied by Private O'Neill's comrades from the Fourth Infantry Battalion along Shandon Street and will arrive at the Church of the Ascension, Gurranabraher, Cork, at 8 p.m.
Tomorrow, the funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., attended by members of the family, also the General Officer Commanding the Southern Brigade, Brig Gen David Taylor, and the Officer Commanding the Fourth Infantry Battalion, Lieut Col David Prendergast and colleagues from Collins Barracks, the Southern Brigade and the Naval Service.
After the funeral Mass the coffin will be borne by a bearer party of 10 soldiers from the First Southern Brigade, Military Police Company, to the hearse, which will be flanked on both sides by 10 pall-bearers from the Fourth Infantry Battalion.
At St Catherine's Cemetery, Kilcully, a firing party will fire three volleys and the trumpeter and drummer from the band of the First Southern Brigade will play the Last Post, followed by Reveille.
