Almost 350 emergency ESB crews were on standby throughout last night for the stormy weather forecast yesterday by Met Eireann. Fifty houses in Coolaney outside Sligo town houses were blacked out when high winds caused a power "outage" to the local transformer. An ESB spokeswoman said last night that power was expected to be restored by morning.

Early this morning gardai reported high numbers of alarm calls, because of rising winds and in Craughwell, Co Galway, a tree fell on a parked car causing severe damage.

In Letterkenny, Co Donegal, parts of the town were cut off for up to four hours yesterday evening because of an electrical fault and not high winds.

In Cork heavy rain caused flooding in the lower parts of the city near the river Lee at high tide. The water receded in the late evening as the tide went out.
