A replica statue of the Irish language writer Padraic Ó Conaire is to be erected in Galway city.

The city council has agreed to erect the replica after the original was removed and placed in a museum after being damaged by vandals in 1999. The original statue, which was unveiled by Eamon de Valera in 1935, will remain in Galway City Museum.

Padraic Ó Conaire, who died in 1928 aged 46 years, is regarded as one of the foremost Irish language writers and a significant contributor to the revival of Gaelic literature in the early 20th century.
