Work on a replica fountain commemorating Queen Victoria's visit to Dún Laoghaire in 1901 was completed yesterday afternoon, replacing the original structure which was destroyed in 1981.
Last November work on the fountain was halted after construction workers received threats.
Men working on the site at the entrance to Dún Laoghaire harbour were told that if they didn't down tools "men in balaclavas would deal with them". Negotiations between the construction company and a third party led to the resumption of work some weeks later.
The project was financed by the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company at a cost of €400,000. Mr Donal Marren, a director of the company, said he was delighted that the restoration was finally complete.
"It was wonderful to see the last piece being put into place. I hope people will look on this as a beautiful piece of street furniture and not see anything else in it," he said.
The fountain was grant-aided by the Heritage Council as a project of historic and architectural importance.
