London - Britain's government-funded National Health Service (NHS) is among the worst in the developed world because of a lack of money and competition, according to a new report released yesterday.
It has one of the worst survival rates for heart disease and cancer, the leading killers in the developed world, and spends a smaller proportion of GDP on its health service than most of its European neighbours. The report by The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) said lack of competition means there is no incentive to raise standards.
