A report into the circumstances surrounding the death of Bríd Cummins on the day she was due to be evicted from her local authority flat in Galway city has been deferred.

The report, due to be circulated to city councillors yesterday, will address the many concerns arising from the case.

Mr Joe McGrath, newly appointed Galway city manager, has sought agreement from the members to extend the deadline for the report's release to February 24th.

In a letter delivered to each councillor, Mr McGrath said that as he had only recently taken up duty, he was only now becoming familiar with the case.

He said councillors had received 209 questions and it would take time to provide a careful and considered response to these. He added that given the sensitivity of the situation, he would also need to get clearance from the legal representatives of the people involved to release personal information relating to the case.

The death of Ms Cummins (48) on December 6th caused a political furore with city Mayor Catherine Connolly castigating the city council's anti-social policy.

An earlier report into the matter was circulated to the councillors in early January, but they believed this report was inadequate and unsatisfactory and called for a full inquiry into the case.
