A leading republican from west Belfast sued the RUC yesterday arising out his arrest in 1992 and detention at Castlereagh holding centre for four days. The compensation claim brought by Mr Brian Gillen (42) in the High Court in Belfast was listed to last three days but was settled after talks between lawyers.

The terms of the out-of-court settlement were not disclosed, but it is understood Mr Gillen received a four-figure sum in damages.

It was his second time to successfully sue the RUC. In 1990 he was awarded substantial four-figure damages after claiming that he was ill-treated at Castlereagh and suffered a perforated ear drum.
