A UNIVERSITY College Dublin researcher has won the European Young Researcher award at the EuroScience Open Forum under way in Turin.
The project involved new screening methods to diagnose breast and ovarian cancers.
Dr Donal Brennan is a post-doctoral fellow at the Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research. He is also a registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Coombe Women’s and Infants’ University Hospital.
As a clinician researcher, he wanted to develop faster screening technologies to give early warning of these diseases. “It may even offer a viable route to the ultimate goal of personalising therapeutic regimens in cancer care,” he said. The award recognises scientists in early career stages who have shown ability at national and European levels.
