The Labour Party has strongly criticised the Government’s "inadequate" response to the British government’s recent decision to develop the MOX plant at Sellafield.
Announcing the party’s proposed ten-point action plan aimed at blocking the commissioning of the plant, Labour spokesperson on Public Enterprise Deputy Emmet Stagg said the Government had failed to take assertive preventative action against the "unprecedented threat" Sellafield poses to the health and safety of Irish people.
Among the proposals are suggestions for areas where legal action could be initiated. The plan also encourages a number of political and diplomatic initiatives, including the convening of an international conference on the threat posed by Sellafield and the possible establishment of a Council of the Irish sea.
Mr Stagg claimed that the Government had allowed Sellafield to fall off the political agenda and said their response to public fears had been "feeble".
He challenged the Government to accept the Labour motion, which will be debated in the Dáil tomorrow and on Wednesday.
