Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy has awarded six bravery medals to Garda members based in Dublin, Monaghan, Galway and Kilkenny for their roles in tackling armed criminals and saving a member of the public from a fire.
Sgt Michael Mulloney, of Callan Garda station, Co Kilkenny, was awarded the highest honour of a gold Scott medal after he pursued and arrested an armed raider suspected of shooting a postmaster dead during a raid in Kilkenny city in December last year.
The raider is currently awaiting trial for shooting 23-year-old postmaster Alan Cunniffe.
Sgt Mark Clarke, of Crumlin Garda station, Dublin, was awarded a bronze medal. He was on duty outside a house in Crumlin 14 months ago when he was shot. The house had been shot at an hour earlier as part of a dispute between families in the area.
Garda John Dunne was also awarded a bronze medal for helping to capture the gunman after a car overturned.
Supt Enda Walshe, of Loughrea Garda station, Co Galway, was awarded a bronze medal after he tackled an armed raider in a bank where he was a customer in Loughrea in October last year.
Garda Michael Fitzpatrick and Garda Grainne Gallagher, both based in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, were each awarded bronze medals after they saved a man from a burning building in April 2006.
