Gardaí in Dublin have reported a rise in drink-related offences in the aftermath of yesterday's St Patrick's Day parade.

A particular rise was noted in juvenile drink-related offences. Pearse Street Garda Station made 47 arrests, mostly for drunk and disorderly, with arrests also being made for criminal damage and assault.

One Garda called for reinforcements after he was confronted and knocked to the ground on Grafton Street.

A European Comparison report released last year showed that people in the Republic are more likely to engage in binge-drinking compared with drinkers in other European countries.

It found that the consumption of alcohol per drinker in the Republic was 12.1 litres per year, much higher than that found in six other European states.

Gardaí are investigating an incident in which a man was stabbed in Swords, Co Dublin, last night. The incident happened on Well Road just before 7.30 p.m.

A man was also stabbed just after 6 p.m in the Cloghers area of Tralee, Co Kerry.  His injuries were described as minor.
