Taoiseach Brian Cowen has congratulated Stormont Minister Margaret Ritchie on her election as leader of the SDLP.
Ms Ritchie succeeds Mark Durkan who stood down after eight years as leader.
Mr Cowen TD said:
"I send my warmest congratulations to Margaret Ritchie on her election. In assuming the office of SDLP leader, she follows in one of the most distinguished lines in Irish political history."
As Minister for Social Development, Mr Cowen said Ms Ritchie has shown values and leadership skills required "to build a better future."
"I look forward to working with Margaret as we continue to work together for lasting peace and prosperity throughout Ireland," he said.
Sinn Féin President Mr Gerry Adams also congratulated Ms Ritchie on her election. Mr Adams said:
“I wish Margaret Ritchie well in her difficult job, and I hope that this will usher in new era of constructive and forward looking politics from the SDLP.”
Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore extended his congratulations to the new SDLP leader.
"At a time when Northern Ireland politics continues to be held back by regular crises and the poor relationship between the DUP and Sinn Féin, the need for a party like the SDLP with its commitment to inclusion and democracy has never been greater."
