A "River of Light", featuring the Shannon in a spectacular display of laser beams, fireworks and music is how Limerick city will welcome the new millennium. The laser and lighting show will project images of Limerick's history across the river on to the landmark buildings of King John's Castle, St Mary's Cathedral, the City Hall and Courthouse.

The ceremony will begin at 3.30 p.m. with services at the two cathedrals and at the Redemptorist, Christ Church and the Holy Rosary churches. Half an hour later the congregations, many carrying lighted lamps and escorted by bands and other musicians, will march to designated viewing areas beside the river.

Following the "Last Light Ceremony" and a brief ecumenical service, the Mayor, Mr Jack Bourke, at 4.55 p.m. will switch on the special Millennium lighting on Sarsfield Bridge, which will include the Shannon Rowing Club, on the centre of the bridge. The laser show and fireworks will follow at 5.10 p.m. for 50 minutes.

Mr Bourke yesterday called on the public to "come out and enjoy this moment of history". He added: "It is a moment when Limerick can pause to reflect on the past and embrace the future".
