Four performances of "Riverdance - The Show" in Madrid have been cancelled after a major fire at the city's Palacio de los Deportes this morning.Fifteen fire brigade units are fighting the blaze and two firemen have been slightly injured. No member of the Riverdance Liffey company was in the venue at the time of the fire.
It will be at least two days before the building is deemed safe for inspection. Riverdance costumes, scenery, projection equipment and company documents may have been destroyed in the fire.
Fifteen thousand tickets had been sold for four Madrid shows.
Senior executive producer of Riverdance Liffey Julian Erskine said: "At this stage we do not know whether we have, in effect, lost the entire Liffey production. But there is absolutely no doubt that we will have the Liffey company back on the road and we will be in Cologne as planned in August."
