Fridays are the most dangerous day of the week for road users, particularly in October, a survey published today found.

A survey of almost 10,000 motor accident claims also showed Saturdays in August are the second most likely times a motorist will be involved in a crash.

A Thursday during September is third on the list, according to figures from InjuriesBoard.ie, which administers personal injury claims in Ireland.

However, Tuesdays have been deemed the safest time to go out on the road - especially in the month of June.

Of the 9,655 road accident awards made in 2006 and 2007, one in 10 happened in October, compared with fewer than 7 per cent recorded in February and June.

Although 16 per cent of crashes happened on a Friday, only 13 per cent were on a Tuesday. t was also revealed that more than €200 million was made in claims over the two-year period.

Patricia Byron, of InjuriesBoard.ie which compiled the figures, said the results provide a valuable insight into motor crash trends in Ireland.

“Injuries arising from motor accidents account for more than seven out of every 10 awards for personal injuries in Ireland,” Ms Byron added.

Earlier this year, the Injuries Board revealed Co Louth had the highest level of awards - accounting for 4.58 per cent of total awards, despite representing just 2.62 per cent of the national population.

Since 2004, personal injury claims in Ireland (excluding medical negligence) must be processed through the Injuries Board rather than through the courts.
