A gang has stolen over 10 million euros from a security van in what is believed to be Germany's biggest ever cash robbery. German police have issued a nationwide alert for the thieves.
The gang robbed a security van transporting money to banks when the driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Frenchman, threatened an accompanying colleague with a gun and handcuffed him.
The suspect then drove the van into an underground garage, where at least two accomplices helped transfer four strongboxes of money into a car before fleeing.
The handcuffed guard was discovered only when passers-by heard him calling for help.
The biggest haul so far in a comparable robbery in Germany was 6.95 million marks (3.55 million euros) near Soltau in Lower Saxony in 1997.
