Beijing - China would welcome a visit by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs Mary Robinson, a senior Chinese minister told the British Foreign Secretary, Mr Robin Cook, in Beijing yesterday, Conor O'Clery reports.
The Chinese government was ready to welcome a visit by Mrs Robinson at any time, a British Foreign Office spokesman quoted the Chinese Foreign Minister, Mr Qian Qichen, as saying. Last week, China protested to Britain over a high profile visit to London by the exiled Chinese dissident, Mr Wei Jingsheng.
