Margate's Takaloo reclaimed the WBU lightweight title in spectacular fashion at Belfast Odyssey Arena tonight when he stopped Dubliner Jim Rock in the ninth round.

Takaloo, who first won the title two years ago with a sensational first round stoppage of Manchester's Anthony Farnell, unloaded an explosive right hand which sent Rock sprawling to the canvas.

Though the brave Irishman managed to get to his feet referee Micky Vann had no option but to stop the fight.

The new champion certainly did not have it all his own way and 'Pink Panther' Rock took the opening two rounds as he outworked his opponent, repeatedly getting through with a solid left lead.

Takaloo was struggling but in the third got away with some decent shots to body and head.

It was warming up into an absorbing contest and in the fourth both men landed heavy blows, though Takaloo's seemed to be always more potent.

Rock produced his best work in the fifth, having particular success with his clubbing right hook.

The Irish fans were starting to sense the possibility of an upset as Rock continued to out-work his opponent, marching forward and launching blow after blow.

But Takaloo turned the tide in the seventh and Rock found himself on the back foot for the majority of the round.

Clearly tiring, Rock had to take enormous punishment in the eighth as Takaloo reined down tremendous combination punching.

The fight was still in the balance and it was a bolt from the blue when Rock was sent to the canvas by Takaloo's rapier right hand at just 49 seconds of the ninth.

Takaloo said; "Rock was tough and strong but I wanted to prove I was genuinely world class and I did that.

"He was tough and he stuck to his game plan but when I got through to him there was only going to be one winner.

"The first punch I set him up with and an even better punch won me the fight.

"I now want to go on and hopefully get a rematch with Daniel Santos, the WBU champion."
