European Round-up
Real Madrid's hopes of winning the Spanish title received another setback as Ronaldinho masterminded a 2-1 win for Barcelona at the Bernabeu as Valencia took a one-point lead at the top of the table after drawing 1-1 with Athletico Bilbao.
Santiago Solari looked to have set Madrid on their way to victory, breaking the deadlock early in the second half following David Beckham's corner. But Patrick Kluivert scored within seconds of coming on as a substitute. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, on loan from Arsenal, advanced into the area and lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Iker Casillas for his fellow Dutch international to head into the net.
Portuguese wideman Figo, who Real bought from Barcelona was then sent off following his strong challenge on Carles Puyol before Ronaldinho's chipped through-ball allowed Xavi to score the winner.
A late double from Uruguayan striker Fernando Correa helped give Real Mallorca a 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Valladolid that lifted them out of the Primera Liga relegation zone yesterday.
Valladolid had cancelled out Andrija Delibasic's early strike with a spectacular volley from midfielder Chema in the second, but Correa restored the lead when he caught keeper Albano Bizzarri off his line in the 70th minute.
The former Atletico Madrid player made sure of the win with a brilliantly struck 25-metre free kick five minutes from time.
The win lifted the islanders into 14th place, two points above the crowded drop zone and meant that Espanyol dropped back into the relegation places despite their 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
Already relegated Murcia prop up the table on 20 points, Celta Vigo, who won 1-0 at home to Osasuna, are in 19th on 36 and Espanyol have 37. Six other teams are within three points of the relegation zone.
In Italy AC Milan's title celebrations were put on hold after they could only produce a goalless draw at Udinese, while nearest rivals Roma recorded an impressive 3-0 home win over Empoli.
Francesco Totti scored for Roma after 41 and 89 minutes, sandwiching John Carew's strike.
Carew had an eventful match, despite featuring for just five minutes. He came off the bench after 63 minutes, scored his goal a minute later, and then in the 68th minute was red-carded along with Empoli's Jorge Vargas after the pair scuffled. Roma are now six points adrift of Milan with three games remaining.
Third-placed Juventus suffered a shock 4-3 reverse in their Stadio Delle Alpi where Lecce produced the most notable win of the day. Juventus are out of the title race and they are now almost certain to have to enter the qualifying round of the Champions League after their defeat.
French striker David Trezeguet put Juventus on their way with a close range strike in the third minute but then Lecce ripped open the much criticised home defence three times before the break, with two from Ivory Coast striker Cedric Konan.
Lecce's Uruguayan forward Ernesto Chevanton then made it 4-1 with his 17th strike of the season before Juventus fought back with goals from Enzo Maresca and Alessandro Del Piero.
Paris Saint Germain charged into second place in the French First Division after Pauleta's double helped them overcome Newcastle's UEFA Cup semi-final opponents Marseille at the Parc des Princes.
