Justin Rose has decided to play in this week's Smurfit European Open at the K Club in Kildare.
After failing to come through the Open qualifying competition by one shot at Sunningdale yesterday the 23-year-old was so gutted that he said:
"There's no point going if you've got no chance to win - and I'm hitting it terrible."
He has finished 15 over par in his last two tournaments, the US and French Opens, but he could still rescue a place at Royal Troon either this week or at next week's Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.
Three places are on offer in Ireland. The leading non-exempt player qualifies, as do the leading two in a table based on performances on the European Tour these last seven weeks.
French Open champion Jean-Francois Remesy is almost certain to earn one of those and Rose is among those who would have to win to get to Troon that way.
Ian Woosnam, Jose Maria Olazabal and Jesper Parnevik are in the same position after they missed out at Sunningdale as well.
Parnevik is hoping a shoulder problem does not damage his hopes after he made the decision to rejoin the European Tour and become eligible for the Ryder Cup.
"I had it at the US Open qualifying and am struggling a bit with it," said the Swede, regretting he could not have stayed in America for the Open qualifier there after hearing of the mass last-minute withdrawals.
Woosnam has not missed an Open since 1981 and commented: "I'll just have to try to win a tournament or get in some other way."
His last chance could be the spot available to the leading non-exempt player at the Scottish Open.
