Republican Sinn Fein has condemned recent threats to Protestant clergymen in the Border area. In a statement after a meeting of its ardchomhairle, the party said: "Having been subjected ourselves to threats of all kinds from many sources down the years, we condemn all threats to uninvolved civilians, including reported threats to Protestant clergymen in the Border areas, as contrary to republican philosophy and the spirit of 1798."
Some media reports had linked the threats to the Continuity IRA. Security sources say the CIRA is Republican Sinn Fein's armed wing, a claim the party denies.
