RTÉ had originally planned to spend £2.5million on the refurbishment.

The spokeswoman said RTÉ asked the FSA to meet with the catering company who have the franchise for the canteen.

Following the issuing of the improvement order the canteen has been voluntarily closed down for re-tiling and re-flooring to ensure the best service, the spokeswoman said.

RTÉ would always comply with such an order, she said.
