The RTÉ documentary Behind the Wallswas imbalanced and lacked objectivity in its portrayal of the mental health system, according to the leading body representing psychiatrists.
The Irish College of Psychiatry of Ireland said yesterday that although the two-part programme, screened earlier this month – which examined the mental health system over a number of decades to the present – raised important issues in a system that has been “flawed and inadequate”, it was not sufficiently objective. If it had been more balanced it would too have highlighted the “multiple advances in the treatment of mental illness in the last two decades”.
