RTE posts losses of over €20 million

When allowance is made for exceptional restructuring costs, the losses rises to €56 million, the Joint Oireachtas Committee was told.

The figures do not take into account the €36 increase in the licence fee that was granted to the national broadcaster earlier this year.

In addition to the losses, the report shows staff numbers fell by 150 during 2002.

There are presently 1,850 people employed in both RTE and the Irish language station, TG4.

According to the annual report, 41 per cent of RTE's revenue last year came from licence fees and 44 per cent came from advertising revenue.

Just over two thirds of its expenditure went on programming.
