The first head of RTÉ's Lyric fm has been appointed as the new executive director of broadcaster's performing groups division, which includes the National Symphony Orchestra and broadcaster's concert orchestra.

Séamus Crimmins, a native of Newry, Co Down, worked with RTÉ Radio as a music producer from 1984 to 1989, and as commissioning editor of RTÉ FM 3 from 1989 to 1998.

Appointed as the first head of Lyric fm that year, Mr Crimmins has been seconded to work with the Arts Council as arts policy director since 2003.

Announcing the appointment Cathal Goan, the broadcaster's director general said he had full confidence that Mr Crimmins' vast commitment and experience from both music and broadcasting perspectives "bodes well for the maintenance and development of RTÉ performing groups as a pivotal force in Ireland's cultural life".
