More than two thirds of the world population can now tune in to RTE after it started transmitting six hours of radio programmes by satellite yesterday.

The programmes are part of a 24 hour English language service co ordinated by the World Radio Network on behalf of 25 international broadcasters. Two satellites, Intelsat 707 and Asiasat 2, covering a vast area, will beam the service to satellite dishes and decoders around the world.

Mr Wesley Boyd, RTE's Director of Broadcasting Developments, said: "As suitable reception equipment is only beginning to come on the market, secondary distribution systems are being arranged initially in Australia and South Africa via domestic direct to home satellites land cable networks."
