Three people were arrested at their homes in Coleraine this morning in connection with what is described as "serious crimes" although police say these were not directly related to an operation examining sectarian attacks in the town.

Searches are being carried out in the Co Derry town as part of the RUC's probe into the series of "paramilitary style" attacks.

Meanwhile, there have been further incidents across the North in the past 24 hours, including an explosion in Dungannon, Co Tyrone and two pipe bombings in Limavady, Co Derry.

East Derry Sinn Féin councillor Mr Malachy O'Kane blamed the UDA for the attacks in Limavady.

"For a number of weeks now Catholic homes across the North have come under nightly attack. It is well know that the UDA has been carrying out these attacks as part of an anti-Catholic pogrom. It now appears their hate campaign is spreading to Limavady," he said.

Local Assembly member Mr Arthur Doherty is seeking an urgent meeting with police following the attack.

He said: "We are relieved there has been no serious damage to property or people in the attack but that is not due to any thoughtfulness on the part of the perpetrators.

"I am seeking an immediate meeting with the RUC locally for an assurance that every effort will be made to make sure that this murderous sectarian campaign which has caused so much suffering to our neighbours in Coleraine and Ballymoney and Larne will not spread to Limavady, which fortunately has been spared the worst of the attacks and this current attack on the peace process - because that is obviously at the back of most attacks."

In Co Tyrone, a building worker was taken to hospital with facial injuries after an explosion in Dungannon this morning while a "crudely made" device was thrown at a house in the town shortly after midnight.

The RUC investigation into reports of an explosion in Killeavy, outside Newry, is continuing. Locals reported an explosion near the railway line at around 10 p.m. last night. The line is closed between Newry and Dundalk and a bus service is in operation. A spokesman for Translink said a warning "of sorts" was received by the company but the source of the blast has not yet been determined. In Co Antrim, a device was made safe by British army experts in Ballymena after being found in a park yesterday afternoon. The RUC say the explosive seems to have been there for some time.

Meanwhile, in Whitehead a pub was damaged by an overnight fire. The RUC say they are treating it as suspicious.
