The RUC has begun a murder investigation after an elderly man died from injuries sustained in an assault in Bangor, Co Down last night.

Mr Frederick Russell McMahon (70) from Abbot's Walk in the town died in hospital after being attacked at the back of Bangor Abbey in Abbey Street.

The assault was witnessed by a passing motorist at about 11.20 p.m.

Det Insp David Skelly said the assault was a "severe and concentrated attack" that involved at least one assailant. The man suffered "horrific injuries", he toldBBC Radio Ulster.

"Unfortunately there are attacks in the Bangor area, as there are across the province, but certainly it's an absolute disgrace.

"A murder investigation has been commenced and the motorist's evidence is obviously very relevant for the purpose of the investigation.

"I would appeal to any person, anybody who was in that area at the time or indeed any person who is aware of anything at all in relation to this matter to contact either myself or the CID office at Bangor RUC station," he said.
