RUC crest is to be omitted from new police vehicles

The RUC crest will not appear on new police vehicles from next month

The RUC crest will not appear on new police vehicles from next month. Assistant Chief Constable Mr Alan McQuillan said the development pre-dated the reforms of the force drawn up in the Patten report.

New vehicles will feature a livery of highly visible blue-and-yellow checks on the sides and red-and-yellow chevrons on the back.

He said there were two key factors: "The first is health and safety. We want these vehicles to be as visible as possible at scenes of accidents and to be used as safely as possibly for our officers and the public.

"The second one is high visibility policing. We have been attempting to increase the visibility of our vehicles as the security situation has allowed us to introduce a more normal police profile. Part of that is making our vehicles very visible."

However, UUP MP Mr Jeffrey Donaldson dismissed claims that the change was not connected to the Patten report.
