THE RUC has carried out forensic tests on taxi-fare money in an attempt to find the killers of a man in the Shankill area of Belfast.

Police are trying to trace two men who were seen being driven off after Mr David McDowell (35) was beaten to death on Thursday.

He was carrying furniture, because he was preparing to move into a house in Battenburg Street, when he was beaten to death.

Passers-by found his body on the footpath at the junction of the Shankill Road and Lanark Way at about 4.30 a.m. He had extensive head wounds.

"David would not have hurt a fly," a member of his family said last night.

"He was a harmless, innocent man. He was not interested in politics or sectarianism. He was not involved in any organisation."

Detectives carried out forensic tests on a taxi in east Belfast which they believe may have been used by the two men.

The cash, which is thought to have been handed over to the driver, was also tested for fingerprints. The RUC has said it knows of no motive for the killing.

A Progressive Unionist Party Assembly member, Mr Billy Hutchinson, and the Ulster Unionist Lord Mayor, Mr Jim Rodgers, have both expressed concern about the killing.
