Greg Rusedski put in a commanding display to beat Byron Black in straight sets and book his place in the quarter-finals of the Heineken Open in Auckland today.

The big-serving British number two finally got onto Centre Court at just before 10:30pm after rain had again wreaked havoc with the schedule.

When Rusedski eventually got his match under way after American qualifier Glenn Weiner had completed his 6-2 3-6 6-1 victory over Arnaud di Pasquale, he comfortably took the first set 6-1.

However, Zimbabwean fifth seed Black battled back to go 4-1 up in the second, before Rusedksi's power began to tell and he eventually clinched the match 7-3 on the tie-break.

Rusedski will now play Austrian Juan Balcells in the quarter-finals.

He said: "I was happy with my play, especially against such a good return of serve and it is good to get through to a quarter-final so early in the year." PA
