Minsk - Unidentified attackers threw a hand grenade into the compound of the Russian embassy in Belarus hours before President Vladimir Putin was due to arrive in the city for a summit, Belarussian officials said yesterday. No one was hurt in the incident. Belarus is hosting a summit of 12 former Soviet republics today.
Meanwhile, Chechen rebels killed two Russian troops and wounded 12 others in a wave of attacks across the war-torn republic, a spokesman for separatist President Aslan Maskhadov said. Mr German Ugryumov, a top anti-terrorism official in Russia's FSB domestic security service, died of a heart attack in Chechnya yesterday, according to Interfax news agency.
