Russia's Anastasia Myskina defeated compatriot Elena Dementieva 6-1 6-2 to claim the French Open singles title after a one-sided final at Roland Garros this afternoon.
Dementieva was quick off the mark as she broke in the opening game after Myskina double-faulted on break point.
However, sixth seed Myskina immediately levelled at 1-1 after Dementieva also gifted her opponent the break by double faulting at 30-40.
Myskina won the third game to love as she started to dictate play with her fluid backhand shots. More consistent of the two players, Myskina went on to break Dementieva again and lead 3-1.
Dementieva, the ninth seed, fought hard in the fifth game but was too erratic to stop Myskina from taking a commanding 4-1 lead.
Myskina took advantage of Dementieva's poor serving to break her again and lead 5-1. Serving for the set, Myskina did not falter and clinch it 6-1 in 27 minutes with another blistering backhand.
Myskina kept up the momentum in the second set by breaking a hapless Dementieva with a lob to lead 1-0.
On a roll, Myskina won the next game to love to lead 2-0. After losing eight successive games, Dementieva finally held serve for 2-1.
The blonde Russian twice double-faulted in her next service game but fought desperately to remain in the match and reduce Myskina's lead to 3-2.
But there was no stopping Myskina, who kept her nerve while Dementieva started to lose her temper and scream in despair as two more double faults - her ninth and 10th - gave her childhood friend a 5-2 lead.
Dementieva's misery on the Philippe Chatrier court ended after just 59 minutes following yet another unforced error.
