IRELAND: Numerous Ryanair flights were cancelled yesterday in advance of France's general strike, causing serious disruption for Irish passengers. Five flights from Dublin and Shannon to Beauvais airport near Paris were cancelled in anticipation of the stoppage, in addition to two return flights from Beauvais to Ireland.
Customers who were due to fly with the airline yesterday were advised to rebook their flights online or seek a refund, which would be processed within 10 working days.
Airports throughout the UK suffered significant disruption to their Ryanair flights when upwards of 70 flights were cancelled. Last night a spokeswoman said flights should operate as normal today.
A spokeswoman for Aer Lingus said disruption to yesterday's flights had been minimal, with most operating as normal. Over the course of the day, there were no forced cancellations.
With the general strike due to conclude this morning, Aer Lingus expects no further disruption to occur to its flights.
Recent demonstrations by French students have also affected the operations of some French universities which are home to Irish students currently on exchange programmes.
Last night, a spokeswoman for NUI Galway said the university had made an effort to contact several of its Erasmus students and was satisfied that they were experiencing no major difficulties.
She added that the Irish students had been advised to contact the university should any problems arise.
