Dublin Fianna Fáil MEP Eoin Ryan has issued a statement today saying the Parliamentary and Presidential elections in Sierra Leone yesterday were free and fair.
Ryan was one of seven MEPS who observed elections. "These elections were free and fair but that
there is still a tense political atmosphere in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. In fact, police re-enforcements were needed to oversee the closing of some polling stations in Freetown last evening," he said.
Ireland has a development aid office in Sierra Leone with a budget of €8 million for a range of projects.
