South Africa's prosecuting authority will charge national police chief Jackie Selebi with corruption.
"A decision has been made, he will be charged with corruption and defeating the ends of justice," said the spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority.
Mr Selebi, whose legal team went to court today in a bid to prevent his prosecution, has denied any wrongdoing. Mr Selebi is also the president of international police organisation Interpol.
Among the indictments that Mr Selebi faces is the charge he received payments from a friend Glenn Agliotti, a convicted drug smuggler accused of playing a role in the 2005 gangland-style murder of a South African mining magnate.
It also says Agliotti gave Mr Selebi money on several instances, including 30,000 rand in cash to fund a dinner in Paris to celebrate his appointment as Interpol president.
"The 'relationship' became a generally corrupt relationship at the instance of the accused," said the 23-page indictment.
In the period 2000 to 2005, Mr Selebi received at least 1.2 million rand from Agliotti and his associates, the indictment said. It added Agliotti bought clothes for Mr Selebi, his wife and sons.
