Sacked Simon director threatens legal action

The sacked chief executive of the Dublin Simon Community said yesterday he will take legal action if he is not reinstated.

The sacked chief executive of the Dublin Simon Community said yesterday he will take legal action if he is not reinstated.

Mr Greg Maxwell, whose employment at Dublin Simon was terminated last week, called on the board to rethink its decision. He said he wanted to get "the job that is rightfully mine back".

Mr Maxwell told The Irish Times he has sought reasons in writing for his sacking, and an explanation as to which different skills the board says are needed. He has not received a reply.

The matter will be discussed at a crisis meeting of the eight-member board tonight.

Employees and volunteers who spoke to The Irish Times yesterday said there was disquiet at the fact Mr Maxwell was let go.

Mr Maxwell has been director of Dublin Simon since 1995. There has been considerable tension between the volunteer-dominated board, and others including Mr Maxwell, who wished to see a redefinition of the role of volunteers within the organisation.

Traditionally run almost totally by volunteers, difficulties recruiting unpaid workers and other factors have seen the numbers of paid staff increase. Dublin Simon now has 116 paid staff, 214 volunteers and an annual turn-over of €8 million.

In a statement issued through a communications company on Tuesday the board said it felt "a different skill set is required of the chief executive for the organisation to progress effectively over the coming years".
