The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff said today the capture of Saddam Hussein has led to the arrest of "more than several hundred" Iraqis, including some leaders of the insurgency.

Appearing on the Fox News Sundayprogram, Gen Richard Myers also said Saddam was not co-operating with US authorities who have been interrogating him since he was caught near his hometown of Tikrit.

"The only word I have is he is not being co-operative," Gen Myers said. US troops have been cracking down on anti-American guerrillas in the week since Saddam was captured on December 13thh. Saddam loyalists and Islamist fighters have killed 200 US soldiers since Washington announced an end to major combat on May 1st.

Gen Myers said he did not have "an accurate count right now because it goes on."

"Some of the information gleaned when we picked up Saddam Hussein led to a better understanding of the structure of the resistance and the former regime elements and we have actually picked up more than several hundred at this point," Myers said.

"We think they are some of the leadership of this insurgency, some of the cell leaders," he added.
