The National Safety Council yesterday appealed to motorists to drive carefully over the bank holiday weekend

The National Safety Council yesterday appealed to motorists to drive carefully over the bank holiday weekend. The council said speed and alcohol were the main causes of road deaths.

"Cities and towns across the country can expect an influx of visitors unfamiliar with the surroundings," a spokesman said. "Our hospitality is something we take pride in - let's be sure to extend it to how we treat tourists on our roads."

The council also urged caution from people engaging in water sports, particularly those using powerboats and jet-skis.

Met Eireann gave no promises on the weather front, saying the forecast for the weekend was very mixed. It would be cool and breezy today, with sunshine, cloud and scattered showers. Tomorrow would be cool and bright, with sunny spells and showers.
