Northern Ireland's first Safeway supermarket opened in Coleraine, Co Derry, yesterday. The chain has promised to create 2,000 jobs in the North over the next 18 months. It has bought 15 Wellworths stores from the Fitzwilton group, with which it has set up a joint venture company. It has also promised to double its business with local suppliers to £200 million by March 1999.
The new store in Coleraine will have a staff of 260.
