Mexico City - Breaking a long silence, the jailed brother of former Mexican president Mr Carlos Salinas said a series of assassinations and kidnappings in 1994 was a conspiracy to damage the Salinas government, newspapers reported yesterday.
But Raul Salinas (51), speaking to reporters for the first time since his arrest in early 1995, did not say who was behind the plot.
"There was an attack on the government of Carlos Salinas in 1994," he said, following a court hearing at the maximum security prison where he is held. "It's not a coincidence that in that year there were all those assassinations and kidnappings of business people. My jailing is part of that series of events." Mr Salinas was arrested on charges of conspiracy to murder.
His brother, Mr Carlos Salinas, has been living in Dublin for the past 18 months.
