Lawrie Sanchez believes he can upset the odds once again and bring success to the struggling Northern Ireland national team.
Sanchez, whose appointment yesterday was a surprise, is remembered for scoring the winner in Wimbledon's shock 1988 FA Cup final triumph over Liverpool and for taking lowly Wycombe Wanderers to the 2001 semi-finals.
"One thing I feel that I have got is that I pull off upsets," Sanchez said today. "That's what I have done to get the job in the first place. In my career as a player and a manager I've had that and I expect a few more."
Northern Ireland have not won in 14 matches and have gone 13 games without scoring a goal. They face a tough qualifying campaign to reach the 2006 World Cup having been drawn in the same group as England, Wales and Poland.
Sanchez said he would consider selecting Celtic midfielder and former national team captain Neil Lennon if the player made himself available again following his self-imposed two-year exile from the national team.
Lennon quit international football after receiving death threats.
"I won't be begging any player to come and play for Northern Ireland," Sanchez said. "Having said that it is my job to put the best team I possibly can out onto the pitch.
"My door will always be open, my phone number will be available to any player if they want to talk to me but those who have shown the dedication to perform in the last campaign are in pole position."
