As the sports stadium saga rumbles on in the south plans by the British government for a new all-sports stadium in Northern Ireland has produced a somewhat sceptical welcome by the GAA in Northern Ireland.

The British government say they are to examine the commercial viability of constructing a new sports stadium. Environment Minister, Ms Angela Smith, will make a decision on the matter by May after she studies a report by Mr Tony Whitehead.

Mr Whitehead was part of the team that produced the project for the new Wembley stadium in London.

However, Ms Smith says: "I believe it is now time to see whether the figures would stack up".

Meanwhile, the Ulster GAA secretary Mr Danny Murphy has questioned whether the plan "is something that could be delivered".

His scepticism apparently comes from a working group that was set up in 1999 to examine the idea of a new arena but the report was never followed up on.

However, aall-sports stadium may be seen as a problem for the GAA as it would encompass rugby, hockey and soccer.
