Manchester United 3 Manchester City 1
A Paul Scholes double preserved Manchester United's 29-year unbeaten derby day record at Old Trafford.
Not since 1974 have the Blues tasted victory at the home of their fierce local rivals and a pair of Scholes headers either side of the interval ensured there was no end to that miserable run.
The England midfielder netted his first after just seven minutes, before Ruud van Nistelrooy added another just before the break.
Shaun Wright-Phillips' goal briefly threatened a City comeback after half-time but Scholes' finished them off when he nodded home Kleberson's cross.
Moments earlier van Nistelrooy thought he had got his second when Scholes' slide-rule pass set him free inside the City box.
Seaman though made a superb fingertip save, with Richard Dunne completing the clearance as the ball rebounded off the post.
The reprieve was brief as from the resulting throw-in, Gary Neville found Kleberson, who delivered another pin-point cross into the heart of the City box which Scholes headed home.
Howard saved well from Anelka and then pushed a dipping McManaman volley as the visitors rallied but when Scholes completed a memorable afternoon by booting Anelka's header off the line, City knew it was not to be their day.
