A SCHOOL which has been left with limited heating and an unfinished extension and refurbishment project says it will “do whatever we can” to stay open despite problems since its building contractor left the site last week.
The Loreto secondary school in Kilkenny has about 840 pupils and is facing an uncertain future following reports that Omagh-based McCann Brothers, which had been working on a major building project, had ceased trading.
The school received no prior warning of the imminent departure of the builders and is now awaiting official confirmation that the contract is finished.
It is understood representatives of up to 160 sub-contactors, who were working on the project and say they are owed money by McCanns, will protest outside the Dáil today.
Chairman of the school’s board of management Martin Hanrahan confirmed yesterday there were problems with heating and water supply in the school as a result of the incomplete project, but said there was no issue with insurance after the school made contact with its insurers and brokers.
