A schoolgirl who suffered multiple injuries when she was struck by a car after leaving a school bus is to be paid £950,000 and costs under a settlement approved at the High Court yesterday.

Mary Byrne, now aged 16, suing through her mother, Mrs Bridie Byrne, of Athy, Co Kildare, brought an action for damages against Mr Tom Cahill, of Tullow, Co Carlow, arising out of an accident on November 27th, 1997. Ms Byrne suffered severe head, pelvic and collar-bone injuries, a fractured leg and memory and hearing loss and now has severe epilepsy.
