Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) has today published the first report of its achievements, which outlines details of €218 million invested in 100 research projects nationwide.
SFI Director, General William C Harris, said: "The work these researchers describe in this report will prove important not only to their respective fields of research, but also to Ireland, as well as to people around the world whose lives this work will eventually serve.
"This human capital is our most precious natural resource and will be the corner stone for social and economic progress in the future."
Some of the projects currently underway here include research into Crohn's disease, lung cancer, speech and language technology, laser technology and schizophrenia.
The report was launched by the Tanaiste, Ms Harney.
Ms Harney said the National Development Plan would invest €2.53 billion in research, technological development and innovation over the next few years. SFI's support of researchers was central to this investment, she said.
