THIS is Ireland’s premier award to recognise excellence in scientific research. First awarded in 1899, this is the 37th presentation.
The medal is only presented to candidates of the highest calibre, those who have made a contribution of global importance to their chosen research field.
Conceived and first set in motion by the RDS, the award programme underwent a re-launch in its centenary year, with The Irish Timesjoining the RDS to confer the Boyle award. The award now also includes a cash prize of €20,000.
The Boyle Medal is presented every other year, alternating between a researcher of any nationality working within Ireland, and an Irish-born researcher working abroad. The 2011 presentation will be made to an Irish-born scientist working abroad.
